    Collecting trip Empty Collecting trip

Post by Fern Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:04 pm

So me and my kids went down to the ditch about a block away where I have seen fish. Looks like we caught 3-4 different kinds along with some ghost shrimp! My son even caught a dragonfly larvae so they got to learn about those and why we didn't want to bring it back. I managed to net a small red eared slider turtle so they could check it out and then we put it back. All in all it was pretty fun and we all got good and muddy Laughing
I put everything we brought home into an empty 10g with a sponge filter that I just cleared out.
I will get pics of all the fish and shrimp that we caught, but it will have to wait till morning, I am beat!
Looks to me like live bearers and/or killifish. I am going to need help IDing these guys for sure! There are spotted ones and stripey ones and some plain silver ones.

The 2nd pic seems like a pup fish in my very quick research, not puffer like but looks like it in that pic. Still cant seem to find any decent sites that have the small Florida fish on them.
I will have to look up least killifish.
Do some pencil fish live in Florida? I fully agree that some look like pencil fish but never thought that they lived here.

Not too sure what I will do with these guys, some may be up for grabs after a 2 week QT.
I know that after catching them and adapting them to tank life that I cant release them back into the wild.

I will try to get pics of each different kind in a catch container soon.

The fish in the last pic is a Gambusia Affinis...Very bad aggressive....People used these for feeder fish and they wound up nipping the fins off the fish that were supposed to eat them.

I see one Green Sailfin Molly female......Not knowing how big they are , but sone of the fish with the dark lines and red tiped fins look like Formosa mosquito fish.

The largest 2 fish are 2" They both look like female mosquito fish to me. The rest of the fish are along an inch long.

On the Gambusia Affinis I think you are right, I have lots of little ones in there of those as well.

Heterandria Formosa, seem to be the ones with the not solid stripe running along them. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Heterandria&species=formosa&id=122

Dano, that was a big help!
