I am setting up a tank for rams and I don't have enough sand to keep the plants happy. What is something I could pot them in?

I use cut off soda bottle bottoms with holes drilled on and near the bottom for water circulation. All these plants are in soda bottle bottoms.

It is good isea to grow plant in soda water bottle. But they
not grow for longer time. The need some space at bottom for
    better growth.
