Re: Collecting trip
I'm sure we can make it a day and time that you could come with! Just gotta bring a net and a bucket! A battery operated air pump is a plus if you want to bring stuff back with you

Re: Collecting trip
Sounds good to me. Just let me know when you were thinking. I'm pretty much free on sundays and mondays, but on mondays I'd have to make sure my mother-in-law could watch the boys.

How old are? they I bring my 6 & 9 year old kids with and we make enough noise so we dont have to worry about water moccasins.

Re: Collecting trip
They are only 2, so not quite ready for expeditions yet, but soon. And trust me, I cant wait for expeditions with them.

Re: Collecting trip
Sounds to me like we need to create a new thread and pick a date to go collecting. I think it would be a great way to meet and greet and maybe get a few more members for the fish club.

Re: Collecting trip
Sounds good to me too. I would pretty much just be along for the ride, considering I have no tanks running, but I'd love to meet some people in person, not just on the 'net.

Re: Collecting trip
I go to Lakes Park with my kids. So far we have got least killies, mosquito fish, marbled mollies. People tell me there are cichlids in there but I've never seen any.Fern wrote:Joe you got any good areas yet? And what all do you get there?
I've been scoping out "Grenada Lake" which is on 41 just south of Alico road, they are building some kind of bridge next to it. The local kids say there are all kinds of fish like blue gill and bass. I'm willing to bet some people have tossed in stuff from their fish tanks so who knows what else is in there.
When it rains and the gullies flood we just go to the corner of my street, so far I got some kind of killies, something that looks like a skinny marbled molly, mosquito fish, and hopolo catfish. I did see a cichlid once but it stayed at the edge of the culvert pipe and would dart in if you got within 10 feet of it.

Re: Collecting trip
Yay! Hows the access to Grenada Lake? I drive by there quite a bit and have really wanted to fish it. Lakes Park does have cichlids for sure. I was talking to an older gentleman who was fishing there one afternoon and he had a stringer full of mayan cichlids. Good sized fish too. He said he was getting lunch! I've seen big gar in some of the little ponds by the train station there as well.

Re: Collecting trip
Not sure if there is still a trail by where my parents are but one could always be made and it's on a kind of dead end street. Don't know how to get to the rest of the lake....it's huge

Kayaks!!!! Light weight, easy to manuever, and you could use two and drag a seine net! Or just fish... But I bet you could mighty close to some gators with one

Re: Collecting trip
Granada lake has penty of open areas where you can access. You could just go from the 41 side since that has all been cleared for construction.
Lakes Park, I guess I need to bring a fishing pole next time we go.

Re: Collecting trip
Thats kinda what I was thinking Joe. It's all fishable too, except the bridges. Probably 'cuz they don't want you catching passers-by on your backcast.

U.S. 41 Just south of Alico Road. Coming from your house it would be on the left, just look for the construction and the big dirt hill and that's where it is.Fern wrote:Mayan cichlids are good eating! I catch them in my parents canal!

Re: Collecting trip
I've thought about parking at that old gas station and wandering around over there. There aren't any signs or anything that say no parking or trespassing so I assume that would be fine, right?

Re: Collecting trip
I don't see why it would be a problem. Trannys Unlimited parks that huge box truck over there all the time.crw.npt wrote:I've thought about parking at that old gas station and wandering around over there. Re: Collecting trip
You get any more ID's on these fish Fern? I was thinking those little spotted puffer-looking guys might be be juvenile sunfish of some variety. The body shape looks right. Do we have any Elassoma sp. around here, cuz thats what I first thought. But maybe just a Lepomis sp juvie.

Re: Collecting trip
ok grenada lake is pretty trashed, me and Zeke went there on a whim, nothing much other than spiders and shrimp and loads of dragonfly larve.
which fish? what fish? who's fish?
look at the Florida flag fish, sounds like what you may have.
