    Discus. Empty Discus.

Post by williemcd Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:29 am

My Richmond based group is not as learned or inhabited by a great number of Discus keepers so I'm posing this question here for the FA of Fla group:

There is a ton of debate about the "Pristine" water conditions etc for rearing Discus.. but I was wondering about the stuff I've read about the judging status of a fish. One of the big criteria is relative eye size... another being how complete a circle the body is.. .abscense of an elongation towards the caudal fin... Yet another is the bars on the typical's.. how solid they are .. how many there are... so.. anyone care to chime in with their thoughts?... here is a photo I've unearthed about relative eye size. There was a disclaimer that certain varieties are excluded from the "acceptable limits". Any input?.. And if so, do ya mind if I share it on my Richmond Fish club?

I agree with the eye size chart, usually I eyeball it, on any fish if the eye looks too big its stunted.

I think theres 2 different bar counts for them.

At the end of the day its all what you like in a fish though!

Yea.. I had one of Urs's pigeon bloods in with 6 scorpions in a 155... it was looking pathetic until after 3 months in a tank with the dozen Blue Turq/Red's she doubled in size.... Her eye size is out of wack compared to that chart but all the research I've read is that PB's are always outside of the norm... And she (?) has become one of my favorite fish and rules the dozen Furqes... (Fire Red/ Blue turqs)...Bill in Va.

Chris... Ship em north to me!....In my youth I had to get into big fish... Although as a challenge I tried Discus back then but since they were all wild caughts (72-73)... they were pretty demanding... Then I got bitten by the bug of BIG FISH!.... Now in my old age, I like/love the sedate state they exhibit... It's not without reason they are called the "Kings of Freshwater fish".... Bill in Va.
