This morning I decided to feed my fry tank only frozen/thawed/deshelled sweet peas for my new BN fry. Unexpectedly the swordtail fry go CRAZY over this stuff. Honestly not even sure the BN got any :/ I think I may make this part of my feeding regimen. They already have a day of fasting (usually), why not a pea day!? That'd still leave 5 days of "normal" feeding...

I would do pea day instead of fasting day, peas are good for them and also help clean out their guts a little bit.

Hmm, I didn't boil them at all. I put them in hot water to thaw and viola! Fish go crazy!

Re: Swordtail fry LOVE peas!
Good question. I'm not sure if there fish version of the onion for cats and dogs.... I have read about people feeding their fish: peas, zucchini, cucumber, spinach, apple, bananas, grapes, lima beans, corn, papaya, mango, and broccili, and probably more thatI'm forgeting. Some of them are to be blanched, others can be served raw.
Swordtails need a lot of protein though, especially the youngins, so fruit and veggies would have to be a treat.

Right, well I knew most of those. I have given my fish red, yellow, and green peppers before. They didn't like them too well. They ate the green more then the others though.

I'm almost positive Papaya is deadly to all fish.

Ooooo thats good to know. Thats something sweet that could have been a nice treat. Now what about mangos? Amanda has a mango try at her grandparents and they have more then they can use for anything. I make a pretty kickin mango habenero sauce with them but, maybe it can be fishy food too!

I had to go through my notes and it's papaya seeds that kill fish. Mango may be harmful, but I have no notes about it. Mango is in the same family as poison ivy and can cause the same rash as poison ivy in some people, so I wouldn't try it for my fish.

My experiments were always done after the fish were fed their normal food. if they aren't very hungry they will turn down the stuff that's no good for them.

Hm, ya I guess that makes some sence. They kinda know what to eat and what not to eat. They're not dogs who eat whatever falls on the floor lol.
