    The 210g FOWLR build

Post by Fern on Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:31 pm

Well the tank is finally here! The decision on what tank for which set up was pretty easy Laughing

The angel and tang FOWLER gets the ugly tank with the ghetto brace Laughing
The stripes on the back are from some kind of glue they had used to put in a background insert, its not coming off it seems etched into the tank Suspect Oh well! Coraline algae will cover it in time! I am quite pleased with the ghetto brace though! Looks very well made from decent aluminum! Will defiantly use it rather than trying to put in a glass center brace! I do want to paint it with something as I dont know what grade aluminum it is and how well it will handle salt water, gotta figure out a paint that will stick to it and give me very good corrosion protection.
The stand is 2x4's and plywood stained and urethaned to look nice, just 2 more coats of urethane on the top and its ready to go into place!
This is going to land in my fish room, I will be setting t6he stand on a layer of bricks though. I get a little bit of water in through the door when it floods and I want to be sure the stand isn't going to rot out over time on me from the water.
The fish moving into this tank are; gray angel, blue angel, naso tang, sailfin tang, blue headed wrasse, and an engineer goby.

Aluminum and salt don't mix, pretty much anything and salt don't mix. The salt will pitt and degrade the aluminum which means micro particles of aluminum could fall into the tank. Best bet is to dip the aluminum in "Plasti-dip" that stuff they use on the handles of pliers. They sell it at Lowes/Home Depot and it rubber coats what ever you dip into it. Brace may be too big to dip so you can also paint it on. The stuff runs and drips so do it over a piece of cardboard.

I think I still have some marine epoxy paint, the 2 part stuff made to coat plywood and cement tanks, think that will stick on it?

It should but I saw that support and it's oxydized, so you have to sand the old powdery stuff off and get to good metal. If you don't get to good metal the paint will flake off in no time.

Ya I planned on sanding it down.

Its just the last time I put in a glass center brace it didn't stay very long.....

Not even started, I'll get it done this week, need the exact measurement of the top rim of the tank (for the legs) to do it though

Did you find out if a 25 foot thing will work or does it have to be 50?

If this is directed to me I have no idea what you are talking about, my brain is all full and refuses to remember anything so you'll have to spell it out.

Probably, keeping the 100g long and a few small tanks just for backup.
