    Natives Only?

Post by crw.npt on Wed Apr 25, 2012 1:17 pm

So, Joe and I have had some back and forth discussions about his Least Killies, and I am active on the NANFA(North American Native Fishes Association) forum and it got me thinking. A lot of the folks on NANFA keep only natives, a few of you all keep at least some natives and I plan on only keeping natives, and it got me thinking. Anyone else keep solely native fish?? Either Florida or just North America??

I have all kinds of fish but my favorites are in the goodeid family.
I'm looking to get some pygmy sunfish Elassosoma evergladei which is a Florida native and also want Elassoma alabamae which is protected in Alabama and they say might go on the federal endangered species list.

And there are a few goodeids native to FL, correct??

I am looking into any of our three Elassomas, but the evergladei or gilberti in particular. The zonatums are just kind of boring.

Which goodeids are you working with right now Joe?

    Right now I have:
    Ameca splendens (group)
    Chapalicthys pardalis (group)
Characodon lateralis (pair) no spawn yet, they do better in groups.
Characodon audax (4 fry) adults were lost, and the male had light coloring in the fins rather than the usual dark grey/black so I think it might have been a sub species.

They say some are native to the U.S. southern states but I don't kow of anyone who has collected them here.

You should attend the ALA convention this weekend all kinds of rare livebearers will be available. I'll be there as a vendor and I hope to sell enough to cover my purchases of fish.

My dad has my 'ditch fish' now, 3 male Florida flag fish and a pair of blue finned killis. His male blue fin is coloring up like crazy lately and I'd like to locate him a few more of them....

Fern, Glad I could hook you up with some more bluefins. Let me know if he gets a spawn out of them.

Dad is stoked! The school was going crazy this morning with his male super colored! So he may have luck and get some fry from them!

I'm going to go to a stream near home here in Lakeland. If I get anything I'll try to post a couple of pics so you guys can identify them for me.

The only thing I've gotten, about ten years ago, was one 1 1/2 inch Large Mouth Bass baby from Lake Deeson. It got too large and mean, I couldn't keep him.

I'll give it another try. But I'm depending on you guy's and gal's help.
