    Tank Build Empty Tank Build

Post by Fern Wed Jul 20, 2011 2:17 am

Ok so me and FishVixen are going salt Twisted Evil
Looking like a 33g long tank that will be drilled with a 55g tank that's been made into a sump.
We have a 36" dual satellite power compact fixture that has a daylight and an actinic bulb, plan on getting new bulbs. Will upgrade later on.
I have a little rock that will be used as a first layer of base rock. The rest will be live sand and rock.
Aiming for a reef tank with only a few fish, first fish will be salt water mollys because they are cheap.
Planning on some peppermint shrimp to deal with aptasia and emerald crabs to deal with hair and bubble algae, what eats bristle worms?
This is gonna be a slow build due to funds so bear with us!

Working at a lfs I will have the time to dig around in tanks and find those small rocks with like 1 tiny coral growing on them, the smaller they are the cheaper they are Wink
    Thanks for the support Bill!

Six line wrasses are your best bet with bristle worms if you ever have them best to check at night or just by lifting a rock another good thing if u don't have corals I would try chemicals for everything from red slime treatment and bristleworms best to get it in the system when it happens I would let the tank hit it's first algae bloom and then fix everything u probably know this but just letting you know Smile Wink

Not that keen on the 6 line wrasses, they have a habit of killing other wrasses and I really want to do a mystery wrasse at some point.... I'm gonna ask my boss if theres another critter that eats them.... hopefully there is, I know we will end up with them, hard to get live anything without them!
Erythromycin is the best thing for red slime and that would be all vix... I'm allergic to it Neutral

What kind of copopods should we get a bottle of? My lfs sells a pretty decent assortment.... About all I know is that they are good little bugs to have scratch

Update on tank size, going with a 33g long for the actual tank.
Using a mag drive 9.5 pump to run the sump, will get the tank drilled with the appropriate size for the pump.

Vixen is outside building the stand now lol

There are alot of creatures that eat them six line wrasses I think are the coolest here is a more friendly list hawkfish mainly fire hawk really neat fish as well I have one coral banded Shrimp another neat one have one as well or for infestations there is always arrowcrabs and concerning the Copepods are u getting a mandarin or something cause if not they will come natrually with the rock the only reasons to introduce them is if u get a fish that eats them at the same time u don't want them over populating your tank

Got a bucket of coralife salt, good enough for what we will be doing in the beginning. I also got one new actinic bulb for the power compact fixture, $44 each is a little painful Shocked

A few nano fish like gobys and a purple fire fish, probably a 6line wrasse till he gets bigger and starts being a pain.

okay plans changed doing a 55 gal (getting drilled today hopefully) with a 55 gal sump. Stand constructed just needs stained and coated to protect from salt. Purchased a Solar Xtreme lighting (4 - 54W T5HO with integrated Blue led's for night viewing and programmable controls).

There is a rod inside the stand to hang a curtain to hide the sump when we want to. Will buy some cheapo sheets and make curtains that can be washed easily.

Looking good my friends... Ya sure didn't go bargain basement on the lighting...um... seems that I've heard that's the key element in Salt.. or at least one of them... Eagerly awaiting your updates. Bill in Va.
