    DIY 150 gallon tank build

Post by joefish72 on Sun Jan 29, 2012 11:24 am

I got this great 150 gallon tank from a craigslist ad. It's drilled with corner over flows and has a black acrylic insert on the back glass. Front glass is just about perfect so I'm probably keeping this one. I'm building my own stand, canopy and lighting and I'll be sure to post plenty of pics as I go.

A special thanks to Zeketaz for the hook up on a local lumber company that sells all the things needed.

Good deal. Glad I could help. Sure beats the product at lowes or home depot.

Yeah, I can't believe the difference in the cabinet grade plywood. The stuff at the big box stores I can throw a sheet over my head and carry it out. The sheet I got at A&M is so much heavier I needed help moving it. That was an awesome referral and thanks again.

Here is what I got done so far:

Bought the wood and cut a few panels already.

Cut the boards, doweled the rails and stiles, and biscuit joined the sides.

Glued the face frame and sides together.

    Here is an update:

The front "face frame" is in the first post and it was made of solid hardwood maple. The sides and back are made of Maple furniture grade plywood (B2 grade for those that want to know). Top deck and inside floor are 3/4 pressure treated plywood. Here is what I have done so far.

Front shot (plywood covers will go behind the left and right openings, the center will get double doors)

Rear shot (There will be a removable center brace in the rear)

    Inside shot of the floor

Inside shot with the plywood floor installed

Well it's just about done, I'm at the sanding stage, I think I might hit it with a very light stain but I want to keep it light colored so I'll have to see what I can find.

White wash it. That will keep it light

Or just hit it with polyurethane, thats what is on my front 55g stand.

Yeah, That's what I did today. Got to do a second coat and add the trim to the top that keeps the tank from sliding off.

Ya just makes the wood looks wet, that's the only color change.
    Pics?

Here is the tank on the stand for a test fit, still have to make the canopy and finish the panels and doors.
