    Baby Map Turtle

Post by crw.npt on Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:35 pm

So, our new apartment is pretty limited on space (and they have a no animal policy) and as a result I am going to have to give up my little map turtle. He is a Ouichita Map(as near as I can tell..) and about two inches long. He is free to who ever wants him who is local because its just a pain to ship small turtles in the winter. The only extras that he comes with will be a halogen basking light and fixture, basking float, and two types of food. Let me know if you think you can give him a good forever home, and keep in mind, he will live at least 25 years if you take good care of him. Thanks all.

Does his tank get algae in it?

Not if you stay on top of it. I've had him for about two months and no algae, but I've seen turtle tanks swamped out with algae. It can be a problem, because of a high bio-load, but if you over-filter and change water regularly it shouldn't be a problem. I've kept aquatic turtles in the past and never really had a problem with algae in any of the tanks. And truthfully, even when there was algae, it was all blue-green or brown cyanobacteria, not hair algae.

well lets see if anyone else wants him, worst case scenario I can hold him till I can find someone with a turtle community who can give him a good home. There are a few folks that stop by my lfs who are turtle keepers and go all out for their turtles and I know that they would do well by him.

Let me ask Rich today and see when the good turtle folks may be able to come in to the shop. And what ones are the really good turtle keepers, I know theres one that got a 150g just for turtles not that long ago!

That would be amazing, the little guy wouldn't know what to do with that much space. I'll try and swing in there sometime on a sunday for sure.

Sorry about your turtle problems. That sucks. But I know how you feel I have had to break down all my tank and sell all of my fish to get ready to move.

Thanks, it does suck for sure. I'm definitely not getting rid of my dart frogs though... too much time and effort involved in those tiny buggers.

Checking out his new home. I have to either get a lower watt bulb or a lamp stand for his tank tomorrow to complete the basking area. Also going to pick up some anacharis for both the turtle tanks. He's way too cute though! We're going to pick a new first name for him but keep Churkle as his last name, lol.

    I'm glad things worked out!!!!
If you need some more bigger rocks to make a basking area I've got plenty that you could have!

I think he's pretty happy here. I caught him basking today, but as soon as he noticed me he jumped behind a plant :,( I've yet to see him eat, but the food is always gone when I get home from work...

He has a healthy appetite for sure, but it took him a few days to get comfortable eating while anybody watched when I first brought him home. He also really likes live bugs. I've given him a few small crickets on occasion and he totally dug those. Haven't tried worms or anything like that, but I'm sure he'd go nuts for 'em.

He ate in front of us today! I'll get some small crix next time I'm at the pet store. Thanks again! It's going to be hard giving him to my parents, he's too cute.

Good Deal! Well, you could always just keep him for yourself Wink Another reason that I picked that little guy out was all of that orange on his head and shell. I hadn't seen a map with that much orange before. And just so you know, he is about 2.5 times bigger now than he was when I got him. He was just a teeny little bugger.
