Holy tank crash Batman
Just tested the water in my 20 gall and it's ugly. Ammonia is .50-1.0 Nitrites is 5 PH is 7.6 and didn't test Nitrites. Did a 50% water change and double dosed amquel plus. I had the new baby angels in that tank and was wondering why they looked so bad...poor lil guys. I have moved them to the 29 with the other angels (didn't want to, but can't leave them in the 20) The odessa barb is having seizures and the kribs seem fine. I threw in some powder bacteria. Next course of action will be to clean my main filter and pour the gunk in the 20.

Did the kids possibly put something in the tank?

They could have but don't think so. I watch them like a hawk when they go in the garage. Poor fish are having a heck of a time. First I forget the amquel last water change and now the water params are whacked

Humor me and test the GH, PH and ammonia of your tap water every week and post your findings, there is something going on for you to be having crashes like this.....

Re: Holy tank crash Batman
It's only crashing in the 20..the 29 is still fine. I guess my fail of not adding amquel to last weeks water change threw my tank into a cycle...possibly

Oh ya.... that will throw you into a cycle!
I still want you to test your tap water just for S&G's

Re: Holy tank crash Batman
When I first moved to "town" and off the well water tested my tap religiously since the Oscars were getting every other day water changes, yeah I know Oscars are fairly tough buggers but wasn't sure how the "town" water was here - the only time I have to really watch it after that quite regular testing there are a couple times a year there's a huge variance and that's after they do the fall & spring cleaning of the lines/pipes so when that's coming around I do everyones water changes, fill one of the ponds for any emergency changes and after everyones taken their showers, laundry & dishes its good to go again 3 days later. But luckily at that we are way on the south end of town which does help

Re: Holy tank crash Batman
do you have your KH kit? That and GH play into the PH stability of your tap water.
With an ammonia reading like that you really need to start using prime instead of amquel and triple up on the dose, I triple dose my prime every time due to my fluctuating chlorine and chlorimine levels, some times my tap water reeks of chlorine.
I would also think about calling your water company, I believe that is above the legal limit on ammonia.

Re: Holy tank crash Batman
I think we need to stage an intervention, lol.
I wasn't big on testing until my tanks went screwy, now I test the hell out of everything. I was water changing like crazy when I was on well water and couldn't understand how my amonia was so high, then I tested the well water and found out all the amonia was coming from that.
You'd also be amazed at what can crash a tank. I had no power for a whole day and it crashed two of my tanks because the filters drained and dried out. Just an FYI FPL paid me over $700 for that little mistake. I still have one tank in cycle because of that.

Now I'm having a problem with the 29 gallon the 75 is still fine. I don't get it.
First I started off with a nitrate spike got it under control now I have nitrites showing. Tap water is showing no nitrites or nitrates. Last 2 days I've done 50% water changes cause that's when this tank started showing probs. I added a 2nd small filter to it to.
