    Fry everywhere

Post by zeketaz on Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:19 am

I got angel fry all over the place and so far mom and dad are doing a great job taking care of them. Wish the odessa barbs weren't in the tank with them but they are...

I caught some of the fry and put them in a breeders net in the tank, but as you can see from the video didn't put a dent in the numbers lol. I also can't tell if they are eating or not...

That's awesome! I'm curious to find out how many survive a week in the tank and which group has the higher survival rate. I got a group of at least 50 in a breeders net inside the main tank and then the 100+ in the main tank with the parents and all the other fish.

All I know is that my moms angels ate their fry when they started to be free swimming and her tank is way boring compared to mine. Boring as in hardly any fish to defend against. My poor fish have it rough if they are parent raising lol

I did. It's been on everyday since they laid the eggs and never got turned off. I think the odessas out smarted them plus mom got to where she didn't want to help take care of them. Also have a problem with my breeders net. I have to silicon around the inside bottom as there are gaps in it and the fry are getting stuck and getting out of it Sad

I am so jealous!!! My two pairs still haven't got it to work yet, the boys don't seem to be fertilizing the eggs.

I have an idea for a fry grow house, I had the same problem with some swordtail fry getting sucked through the slots in the breeder cage and eaten by my angels. I'll have to work on that design it sounds great in my head.

Back to your spawn, how many times did they lay eggs before they got it correct? Mine are on 2 times & 3 times so far. Oh, I can't wait for the meeting I have to hear all the details bounce

I think this was their 3rd spawn I think. I only got 4 fry left and only 2 are still doing kick butt..lol I think next spawn the odessa barbs are coming out and living with Mr. and Mrs. Krib.

Well last Sunday the angels spawned again and had like 500 eggs (maybe a little over exaggeration) but they had 3 huge broad leafed leaves covered in wigglers. Well yesterday they went free swimming and I was collecting a ton of them and a ton got eaten by the other fish Sad Checked on my 100+ fry I caught and they are all still alive!! The fry with the parents are still alive for now to.

When is it normal to expect a huge die off?

Angelfish will become good parents after the first three or four spawns, maybe five.

They start by eating the eggs, then they eat the wrigglers, then they actually start protecting them and keeping them, and they can grow with the parents.

If you want to keep the first spawn you need to remove the eggs. But by removing the eggs, you never give them a chance to become good parents.

Not all angels become good parents. Actually few keep their fry after 2 weeks free swimming due to them getting ready to spawn again.

I think mine would be great parents if I didn't have the darn odessa barbs still in the tank. As soon as the fry that are still with the parents get eaten or I catch them I am going to hunt down the odessas and put them in with the kribs since they are the only fish that really bother the fry. So far out of the ones I caught I've only lost 1, but they've only been free swimming since Sunday...lol

Right, once they get ready to spawn again no one is safe. My Angels even attack my hand when spawning.
