300 gallon Tall Project Empty 300 gallon Tall Project

    Post by joefish72 Fri Jun 24, 2011 3:29 pm

I have had this idea in my head for quite some time and the recent DIY contest gave me reason to go ahead and get it together. After pricing out glass I decided to pay to have the actual tank made for me because just the glass was $2500-$2900 and a pro-built is $1300 including hinged lids.

I already purchased a Fluval FX5 so now I just need everything else, lol.

A trip to Lowes and $650 later I now have 4 solid oak Newel Posts and some special order oak trim coming my way. After I get those pieces I'll find some oak plywood and solid panels to make the rest of the stand out of.

Currently I plan to put the tank against a wall but I may design it so there is a 360 degree view. No hoses or wires running up the outsides of the tank. Obviously a wire from tank to outlets would be needed.

I already dont like you. The Trek comment in my other project post was not needed now this one. Do me a favor and ignore my topics, and maybe go back to the top of this one and read "After I get those pieces I'll find some oak plywood and solid panels to make the rest of the stand out of."

Joe.. I think Alowishus's query was based upon curiosity rather than critique!..He and I have built a number of stand together and with his engineering background I suspect he was concerned about load distribution.. hence the 4 Posts...
My/our next project is to build a stand for a 155 Long...
The plans are for 6 4" X 4" posts cut at 16".. Skined (wrapped with 2X6, capped with 2 2X10's.. This will provide me with 100% wood to ground support.. Bill in Va.

Ok guys, well lets just hope it was my poor interpretation of text.

I'm not an engineer but I have plenty of cabinet experience. I always take the approach of, would I allow one of my kids to crawl inside this while under a load, and if the answer is yes it's well built.

As for the construction it will be a full upper framed deck of 2x4's with 8(4x4) interior posts and a plywood sheet on top. The newel posts will be exterior and only decorative. I plan for three doors in front and two 18" rear access panels. When completed it will be way stronger than the store bought stuff.

My 240 gallon sits on one of those store boughts and I cringe every time I have to stick my head under it. Once the 300 is set up the inhabitants of the 240 will be relocated so I can build a new cabinet for that tank too.

Willie, I like your style that stand will be strong enough to park a car on.

    Lets play nice guys Wink

Sounds like it will be a sturdy stand!
If you wanted to go with a sump I would do a center of the tank overflow so you have a clean 360* view! Pro- no overflow to hide or worry about where its gonna be. Con- cant look into the overflow very well.
Also if you are having the tank custom built have them go a little larger than standard on hole size, bigger is always better Cool

Well this project has been put on hold. Just before leaviog for vacation Lowes called to say the special order trim "can't be made". Seems the manufacturer doesn't guaranty any lengths. I needed 4 pieces about 12 ft and they told Lowes that it could come in as pieces as small as 2-3ft each. The manager at Lowes sounded more upset than I was he even said "I don't understand why they have a special order form if they can't do special orders".

Anyone know a local place around Lee County to get good quality wood? I need some cabinet grade plywood, solid wood posts, trim pieces like crown molding and maybe some other misc pieces but all have to be of the same type of wood.

I know this response isn't a lick of help but... Up in rural NY, I bought a free standing wild cherry tree.. salvaged 22 feet of uninterrupted trunk at 18" diameter. Took it to a "farmers saw-mill".. (runs a big saw (4 ft diameter) off a PTO on a tractor. I ended up with a 22 ft beam 12 inches square.. I had to store it in my kitchen for 2 years, ends coated with wax and turn it every day. I'm not familiar with the rural aspects of florida but us red-necks tend to make do with what's avail near-by..
Oh.. I paid $100.00 for the tree that was standing in a dairy farm pasture. Used the whole beam for a DIY stone fireplace. Bill in Va.

    Now that's a deal!!!
I'm a smooth talker but even I would have a hrd time getting my wife to say yes to lumber curing inside the house. I used to do a lot of wood work in New Jersey (as a hobby) and there were plenty of places that had rough and finished wood of all types. I used to get scraps for free and I made a cherry wine rack, jewelry boxes, end tables, night stands etc.

I'm sure they have them here in Florida but I just don't know where to look. Online only shows builders supply type lumber yards.
