Okay since I went out in left field on the pond residents this year after the livebearers got entirely out of control last summer thought that it would be good to keep a blog about it and the residents.

Residents: 6-8 Angels that went in around eraser size 1 nickel size
    1 L.curvicep
    6-8 Guppys
2 smutty red discus (quarter size)

Temp 82 - 150g water trough - monster old fashion box filter
    Water Lilly

Didn't "deep" clean the pond as part of this experiment to see if the youngsters would feed off the micros along the walls which seems to be the case, the weather it was raining but the angels & discus seem to enjoy hanging out in the water lilly

Now on day 2 and everyone looks great!!

don't most of the fish farms in the far east utilize outside troughs?... I saw a film clip of wattley using them outside at times.. Of course, this was like 30 years ago! Bill in Va.

Yes in Asia they use lots of ponds, their weather is a bit more "reliable" than up here in the Pacific Northwest. My thoughts on this were they do come from a river inviroment that the water isn't always perfect yet they grow to huge sizes thus not deep cleaning the pond/trough. Not covering it with the exception of a huge hydrenea(?)plant for shade/wind break and rain here helps provide a regular supply of fresh water.

Have raised discus before and thought they were no more hard to care for than any other species the only exception healthy stock to begin with. Had gotten a couple shipments that personally I felt were misrepresented has "home grown" stock and much tougher to get going where truly home grown stock are much easier/healthier.

It was a worth a try and since I most days can check them regularly if they show signs of stress I'll bring them in but they seem quite happy out there and have a feeling by the time fall comes around and its time for them to come in they are going to be ticked fish LOL

What I'm going to do since I don't have a fancy camera lens filter is pull 1 of the discus that I can tell from the others and 1 of the baby angels that was the smallest going into the pond and start a photo journal of their growth, think that will be the easiest way to do a sorta growth blog with this.

Okay here's some pics of my super fancy dancy redneck pond LOL did a water change on it 6/21. Caught a couple of the angels which were the smallest going in the dark was the size of an eraser and the light was not much more than an eyelash with fins. In an attempt to catch one of the baby discus I knocked over the water lilly which of course made such a mess of the water couldn't see to catch the lil buggers!!!! Hopefully I'll be able to catch one of them in the next day to post a pic.
