What causes Fin Rot? Usually occurring in weakened fish, most often because of poor tank conditions. Also physical damage or parasites can cause it.
What are some symptoms?
*First signs are milky white areas appearing in the fish’s fins or tail, particularly around the edges
*The fins get a ragged appearance from the disease eating the tissue
*The disease eventually eats away all the clear fin membrane leaving just the fin rays
*Fin Rot that has affected the tail is also called Tail Rot, and can spread to the body
How to treat Fin Rot
*Do a couple large 20-50% water changes with clean, aged water. Suck up as much debris and detritus as possible. Check and clean all filters and clean gravel well. Check for tank bullies.
*If caught early enough you can use Melafix. Treatments designed for aquariums and ponds should be safe if used as directions say.
*You can also treat with off-the-shelf antibiotics. Ask for a treatment that’s effective against gram negative organisms – there are several, which are sold under different names
How to prevent Fin Rot
*Set tank up properly
*Sensibly stocked
*Preform regular water changes (25% a month or 10-20% weekly)
