I kinda plan on doing that for my regular water, get one of those water softener units and just plumb the UV right into it

If you need a softener unit that would be a nice DIY, buy the cylinder with the timer and (the beads inside can't remember what they are called) then use an old garbage can for the salt and put a PVC cylinder inside it for the little hose to run through. If you are on well then you already have a pressure tank so you're all set.

I wouldn't be using the salt part of it, I would just be using it as a holding/aerating/UV vat for fish water, Just pump water out to tanks directly from it and fill it in the evening and let it run all night and by morning it should be good for fish.
